Intelligent Saint

You must have heard of this ancient Hindu mythological story where a Rishi does Tapas and gets a boon from God that he might either have a very good son who would just live for 16 years or many sons who would live forever. The Rishi chose the former and the son died after 16 years.

Hundreds of years later, a similar incident happened in England. This time too God gave the saint the same boon. But this time, our saint was intelligent. A simple trick on God he played and he had a very good son who lived forever. What was the trick?
